Covid-19 has dominated our lives for several years, but we have recently been able to sleep a bit easier thanks to the hard work of healthcare staff around the country. Without the efforts of our vaccinators – both professional and volunteer staff – the effects of the pandemic would currently be much worse.
We have been operating a vaccination centre at ACT Centre, St James’ Old School Building, Cannon St, Accrington for over a year. Since then, our hard-working staff have administered over 65,000 vaccines to the local community.
Last April, when the vaccination programme was still in its early stages, we had just surpassed 6,500 vaccinations. It is a testament to our vaccinators that we have multiplied this figure by ten in a single year.
Any healthcare worker will tell you it is a difficult and demanding life, but their dedication is the reason communities around the country have been made safer during this deadly pandemic. We are extremely grateful for every member of staff and volunteer vaccinator for helping us reach this impressive milestone. It also speaks to the commitment of the local community that uptake has been so strong. Without both the efforts of our healthcare staff and the Accrington community, Covid-19 would be a much greater threat in the area.
As of writing, 78.4% of people in Accrington North East have received their first dose, 72.9% have received their second dose, and 50.5% have had their third dose or booster jab. Cases of Covid-19 over the last seven days are currently at 40.3 per 100,000 people – more than 3x less than the national average.
The national vaccination programme has been a huge success, although uptake has differed depending on location. We’re so proud of our staff and our community for banding together to successfully protect each other.
However, the work doesn’t stop here. Vaccinations will continue to be a vital way of pushing back against the threat of Covid-19, and as long as they are needed, our team will be here to provide this essential service.
